Arabic Poetic History Brought to the Modern Stage

Arabic Poetic History Brought to the Modern Stage

For the past thirty years, Rachid Gholam has enriched the legacy of great Arab artists with his unique voice and artistic vision that examine the origins, colours and diversity of Arabic singing (“maqams”). Considered as one of the most renowned contemporary singers of Sufi music, his unique repertoires draw from a spellbinding and rich musical heritage and poetic genres across the Arab world. Paying homage to styles such as the Andalusian Muwashahat, Syrian Quddud and Sufi chants, he masterfully performs the aesthetic of Arabic poetic text in his art, focusing on the poems of divine love and original Arabic melodies.

An esteemed researcher in the philosophy of Arabic art, and poetic beauty, Gholam has added distinguished and highly respected contributions to cultural and artistic conferences, articles in addition to authoring a group of poems and theatrical pieces. Together with numerous ensembles and orchestras, he has performed at distinguished international festivals and opera houses across Turkey, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Germany and the UK, where he is currently residing.
